No matter which of our Parks you choose, they are a superb base from which to explore days out and find things to do in North Yorkshire and beyond. With over a hundred recognised visitor attractions within little more than a 20 mile radius the Thirsk area offers a fantastic opportunity to explore Yorkshire’s rich culture and history. Here are just a few of our favourite places which we hope will provide inspiration when you are staying on one of our Parks.
The White Horse of Kilburn, Sutton Bank and many beautiful walks are minutes away. For beautiful grounds and buildings and an abundance of heritage The Abbeys of Rievaulx, Jervaulx, Fountains and Byland, York Minster and Castle Howard are all not too far away.
Days out for families and activity? Lightwater Valley, Flamingo Land and the Yorkshire coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough are just a few of many places that will ensure a great day for all.
Sport is also well catered for with local golf courses, six racecourses and a swimming pool in Thirsk, just a short distance from Abbots Green.
Bagby Inn, Bagby
A quaint traditional pub in the village of Bagby, serving real ale and home cooked food.
Crab & Lobster, Topcliffe
Generous, unpretentious and prepared to perfection. If you’re serious about food, a visit to the highly acclaimed Crab & Lobster Restaurant is a must. The ‘Crab’ offers a wide variety of gourmet dishes, from fresh local seafood to traditional English fare.
The Swan, Topcliffe
A charming, quaint traditional pub serving bar meals and plenty of real ale. It has recently been refurbished and is particularly cosy in the winter, with its open fires and comfy seating.
Angel Inn, Topcliffe
Originally a travellers rest, the Angel Inn at Topcliffe near Thirsk cherishes its historical roots whilst at the same time offering modern dining, beautiful gardens and an excellent conference and function facility. Situated just minutes away from both the A19 and the A1(M), the hospitality is superb and the welcome always warm.
The Dog and Gun, Carlton Miniott
A fantastic beer garden is one of this pub’s most popular attractions, but it also boasts delicious food and a great family room to hire for special occasions.
Forresters Arms, Kilburn
The Forresters Arms is situated in the picturesque village of Kilburn near York, surrounded by immense natural beauty in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, also known as Herriot Country. The pub/restaurant nestles below the famous White Horse, a unique landmark of North Yorkshire, believed to be the largest of its kind in England.
The World of James Herriot, Thirsk
You’ve probably read the books written by James Alfred Wight or watched “All Creatures Great and Small” on TV.
Now come and see where James Herriot, the world’s most famous vet, lived, worked and relaxed. See his home and surgery in Thirsk; travel back in time to what life was like when James was a vet in Yorkshire. See the car he drove, step into the TV set, try your hand at being a vet and even experience what it was like to hide in a World War 2 air raid shelter, and don’t forget the chickens!
